In collaboration with The Institute of Internal Auditors, Singapore, Woon Pheng Ong (Director, Head of Financial Advisory Services, Nexia Singapore PAC) and Edwin Hooi (Director, Head of Risk Advisory Services, Nexia Singapore PAC) with our whistleblowing technology partner, David Morgan (Global Managing Director, Veremark Whistleblower Technology Solutions) shared their insights at a webinar on 11 June 2026, “Implementing Effective Whistleblowing Programmes and Governance”.
Over 200 participants attended the webinar and were actively engaged with our presenters, raising questions that enriched the discussion.
‘Walking the talk’, Woon Pheng started the presentation by sharing Nexia Singapore’s journey in implementing its own whistleblowing policy and program, which integrated Veremark’s solution, in 2025. At the start of 2026, the Chairman of Nexia Singapore shared the following with all staff via an internal notice, “The Firm encourages the reporting of unethical conduct and in pursuit thereof, grants immunity to whistle-blowers. A whistle-blower acting in good faith and who has not himself or herself engaged in serious misconduct shall be protected from any forms of harassment, retaliation, adverse employment or career advancement consequence or discrimination, including but not limited to demotion, dismissal or reduction of compensation or privileges of employment.”
In the final segment of the one-hour webinar, Edwin highlighted the close link between governance, internal controls and whistleblowing, all of which formed an inter-connected framework. He noted that, despite its costs, implementing a whistleblowing programme supports sound corporate governance within an organisation. However, such policies are only as good as the implementation and the tone must be set by top management. Edwin also shared two case studies – Boeing and SingPost – on why whistleblowing should matter.
Overall, the session provided participants with practical insights into implementing an effective whistleblowing policy, supported by strong internal controls, within a culture of integrity and accountability.
